Banana Curls – Mom’s Point of View

When I was at my parent’s house scanning family photos, I would occasionally come across a photo that would cause a certain reaction from my mom, but a very different reaction from my dad.

Here is one such photo.  It’s a true family favorite of my mom.

My mom told me that my grandmother made many of her dresses.  That didn’t surprise me.  My grandmother was a talented seamstress.

What was surprising (at first) was when mom mentioned that the dress and hairstyle were inspired by Shirley Temple. Once I thought about it, this made perfect  sense!

My mom was born in 1930.

Shirley Temple was a child star of the 1930’s known for her incredible dancing and singing talent, and, yes, her lovely, perfect curls.

As you can see Mom’s hair lent itself to the same sweet banana curls.

Mary, with curls...

What a wonderful inspiration!

On Sundays, my sisters and I would also watch re-runs of Shirley Temple movies!  We loved to watch her sing and dance.

I remembered that my hair also formed very nicely into those same banana curls.

My mom’s comments made me smile as I recalled my own childhood memories.

What surprised me even more was my dad’s reaction to the photo.

Since my dad’s reaction takes this post in a very different direction, I’ll share his point of view tomorrow.

It was a sweet vignette that I keep re-playing in my mind several weeks after my return home.

Please stay tuned…

I've always enjoyed writing and finally decided it was time to blog! As part of my profession I write every day, but I'm now trying to take the time to write creatively. My family and friends have been very encouraging as there is little that is written down in the way of a family chronicle. This is a favorite topic of mine! In addition to family history, I write about life, family, friends and faith. My husband is a full-time parent to our special needs daughter. I’ve explored this topic, too. I also enjoy music, crocheting, reading and relaxing with my family. I hope you enjoy what I have to offer!

I remember banana curls. My best friend had them when we were in the first grade. My hair was too short to have banana curls. I thought they were very cool. My mother called them rag curls because she said the hair was wrapped around rags.

Hi Judy! I know people used rags and also newspapers! We used lots of spongy rollers. My husband wasn’t familiar with the reference so I had to explain about the shape. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I remember the old Shirley Temple movies. They always made me cry.
